Liberty Half Eagles
1849-C $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. The usual late die state with a radial crack extending toward the center of the eagle from the U in UNITED. This is a luminous yellow-gold Charlotte five dollar piece with mostly clean surfaces aside from moderate marks beneath the TA in STATES. The strike is good save for blending on the eagle's left (facing) leg and on some of Liberty's hair curls around the face. Luster brightens recessed design elements. The 1849-C is a fairly plentiful Charlotte half eagle with a few hundred examples known in all grades, suitable for type purposes. Census: 42 in 55, 45 finer (6/17).
