Liberty Half Eagles
1849-D $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 25-S. The mintmark is positioned evenly between the fletching and stem. More often than not, the 1849-D appears at auction in VF to XF condition. Winter estimates around 50 coins survive in all AU grades with merely five or six Uncirculated coins finer than the one offered here. This borderline-Mint State half eagle is exceedingly sharp, especially on the reverse -- a rarity among North Carolina issues. Lightly abraded surfaces showcase luminous luster around the peripheries. Population: 14 in 58, 9 finer (6/17).
