Liberty Eagles
1839/8 $10 Large Letters XF45 NGC. The Head of 1838 leans forward and has a curved truncation. A sweeping curl covers most of the ear, though the lobe shows. This important introductory design subtype was coined in limited quantity only in 1838 and for part of 1839 before its replacement by the familiar bust that ruled the denomination until 1907. The present example has pleasing sharpness and lacks any mentionable abrasions across the moderately luminous wheat-gold surfaces.
