1870-S $10 -- Surfaces Smoothed -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. The San Francisco Mint struck 8,000 eagles in 1870, which quickly became scattered in circulation. The date is almost unknown in Mint State and only a few AU coins are certified. PCGS estimates that 80 to 100 pieces are known in all grades. This example is sharply detailed but some minor smoothing of the abraded fields -- mostly on the obverse -- prevents a numeric grade from PCGS. The coin has medium yellow-gold color.
