Liberty Eagles
1879-O $10 -- Repaired, Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Variety 1. The New Orleans Mint was resurrected as a coinage facility in 1879 for the primary purpose of producing Morgan dollars in response to the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. However, token quantities of eagles and double eagles were also struck in the first year of operation since the Civil War. The 1879-O eagle comes from a mintage of 1,500 coins and is a great rarity in any condition. PCGS estimates that only 75-100 coins are known in all grades. The present example is well-detailed and offers medium green-gold color. The surfaces are extensively tooled, likely in an attempt to eradicate surface chatter, which was more or less successful in some areas. The tooling will enable a budget-conscious collector to strive for this sharply detailed coin when it otherwise would be far out of reach.
