Liberty Double Eagles
1853 $20 MS61 PCGS. A scarce and appealing Mint State Type One double eagle, showing bold motifs and satiny yellow-gold luster. The surfaces are remarkably smooth and unabraded aside from a couple of tiny marks on Liberty's cheek. In 1853, the San Francisco Mint was not yet in operation, meaning that freshly mined gold from California was still frequently shipped to the New Orleans and Philadelphia Mints for coinage. The bright yellow-gold color of this Philadelphia coin is reminiscent of the California gold produced during that period. Population: 18 in 61, 27 finer (6/17).
