1853/'2' $20 FS-301 XF45 NGC. Recutting within the lower loop of the 3 in the date is traditionally regarded as a remnant of an underdigit 2, although the variety's status as an overdate has been contested in recent years. The die lump below the R in LIBERTY provides confirmation of FS-301, which is often confused with repunched date varieties Breen-7160 and Breen-7161. This yellow-gold example has microgranular surfaces that show only one mentionable mark, a minor edge knock at 9 o'clock on the reverse.
