Territorial Gold
1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. AU58 NGC. K-18, R.2. The firm of Perry, Curtis, and Ward, operating as the United States Assay Office in San Francisco, struck these ever-popular twenty dollar gold pieces, which could be used for payments at the local Customs House and circulated extensively during the period preceding the opening of the San Francisco Mint in 1854. This impressive, near-Mint Gold Rush coin displays strong detail on the eagle and especially on the reverse engine turning. All legends are sharp, and remaining luster issues from the recesses. Listed on page 399 of the 2018 Guide Book.
