COLOMBIA. Contemporary Counterfeit 8 Escudos, 1803-JJ.
26.90 gms. cf.Fr-51; cf.Calico-1499; cf.KM-62.1. Pale orange-gold surfaces are richer orange at the borders of the devices and legends, the surfaces bearing just a short scuff across Charles' neck, and test filings are noted along the edge below the date and along the rim above his head. The strike is full and centered, the denticles shortening and elongating according to the contours of the rim. The die work is competent yet displays enough slight differences to categorize this as a contemporary counterfeit. Interesting to note is that the metal has started to crystallize and is most prevalent on the reverse. This leads us to believe that it is not one of the contemporary forgeries struck in gilt platinum produced by mint employees in after hours activities, but rather one produced outside the mint to be passed into circulation by some unscrupulous individuals. A specific gravity test yields a result of 15.854 which comes out to about 81.5% gold with a variance of -1.8 which would place the gold content at about 83.3% pure gold. An interesting piece which deserves further research and sure expand any already advanced collection. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
