COSTA RICA. Escudo, ND (1849-57). NGC AU-55.
KM-84; Fr-4a. Type VII countermark, Lion advancing left within circle, legend around on both obverse and reverse using hinged dies. All on an 1846-CR JB/E Central American Republic 1 Escudo. The 1846-CR JB has the lowest mintage of only 2,722 pieces struck with the exception of the 1828 and 1850 issues with unknown mintage figures. Also interesting to note is that the Assayer's letter "B" appears to be over an "E". Interesting host coin which deserves further study. Countermarks evenly struck and well executed. Both host coin and countermarks Almost Uncirculated. NGC AU-55.
