L. Thorius Balbus AR Denarius. Rome, 105 BC. Head of Juno Sospita right, wearing goat-skin headdress; I•S•M•R downwards behind / Bull charging right; G above, L•THORIVS below, BALBVS in exergue. Crawford 316/1; RSC Thoria 1. 3.94g, 20mm, 7h.

Good Very Fine. Toned.

Described by Cicero as a man who lived in such a manner that there was not a single pleasure, however refined or rare, that he did not enjoy, the moneyer of the present type was a native of Lanuvium, a city a short distance south-east of Rome close to the Via Appia. This city was the principle centre for the worship of the goddess Juno Sospita and hence her image is used for the obverse type we see here, while the rushing bull seen on the reverse is a type parlant of the moneyer's name.
