Ostrogoths or Vandals, Æ 9 Nummi(?). Circa 5th century AD re-tariffed Carthage Æ18, originally struck circa 300-264 BC. Head of Tanit left / Horse's head right, chisel cut with numeral VIIII in left field. Unpublished in the standard references: for the coin type cf. SNG Copenhagen 149-150 and MAA 57; for chiselled Ostrogothic and Vandalic numerical issues on ancient coins cf. MEC I pp. 28-31 and 424-9. 3.66g, 18mm, 4h.

Very Fine - Good Very Fine. Possibly a unique example, and of great numismatic interest.

It is conceivable that this Carthaginian coin has been re-tariffed with the chisel cut numeral VIIII (= 9) in Ostrogothic or Vandalic Italy or Africa in the 5th century AD, for the style of chiselling is exactly that on the 1st and 2nd centuries AD Roman asses tariffed at 42 nummi. These issues weigh on average about 9-10 grams each, rendering a nummus of about 0.24 grams, close enough for this coin to be regarded as small change worth 9 nummi.
