Ancients
IONIA. Uncertain city. Ca. 650-600 BC. EL third stater or trite (13mm, 4.33 gm). NGC AU 5/5 - 5/5 Blank convex surface with raised central ridge / Quadripartite incuse square. Linzalone 1009 (this coin). Cf. SNG Kayhan 673 and SNG Von Aulock 7762 (both double incuse square). Exceptional, perhaps the best-known example of this earliest form of coinage.
The single incuse square divided into quadrants is notable on this specimen, as this is a more "advanced" form of punch than usually seen on a blank or typeless early electrum piece.
