IONIA. Uncertain City. Ca. 600-550 BC. EL 12th stater or hemihecte (7mm, 1.17 gm). NGC MS★ 5/5 - 5/5. Lion's head right with doubled eye, mouth open, tongue protruding / Double incuse square with pebbled surface. Weidauer 120 (same dies). Rosen 278. Linzalone 1100 (this coin). Extremely rare!
In his book "Electrum and the Invention of Coinage," early electrum expert Joseph Linzalone makes the following observations concerning this piece: "Very rare profile head of lion right with side-by-side dual eyes in linear style, roaring with protruding tongue."
