Ancients
IONIA. Phocaea. Ca. 521-478 BC. EL sixth stater or hecte (10mm, 2.57 gm). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 5/5. Head of warrior left in crested Chalcidian helmet adorned with spiral patterns on bowl, small seal swimming left below / Rough incuse square, partially filled. Bodenstedt 30. Rare! Well centered and struck in high relief.

This rare hecte type is usually described as showing the head of a warrior in a Corinthian-type helmet; however, this extremely well-struck example shows the cheek piece of the helmet appears to be hinged to the bowl, with a "scoop" cut-out in the leading edge, revealing this is a Chalcidian helmet, a more advanced type that is thought to have come into use in the early fifth century BC.
