PHOENICIA. Tyre. Ca. 126-68/7 BC. AR shekel (25mm, 13.93 gm, 12h). NGC Choice XF 4/5 - 3/5. Dated CY 157 (AD 31/2). Laureate bust of Melqart right, lion skin around neck / TYPOY I[EPAΣ KAI AΣ]YΛOY, eagle standing left on prow; palm frond in background; to left, PNZ (date) above club; PK (!) above monogram (?) to right. CF. DCA 920 and DCA supplement 369-371 (same date, KP in right field). cf. HGC 10, 357 (date unlisted). Evidently an extremely rare date, with only three other examples recorded. Areas of roughness.

Most investigations of the historical events behind the ministry and crucifixion of Jesus Christ provide a range of about three and a half years, with his ministry starting in AD 29 ("the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar" as related in Luke) and ending with his death on April 7, AD 33. In truth there is enough "wiggle room" in the four Gospel narratives that no date can be regarded as certain. However it is highly likely that this shekel was minted and circulated in Jerusalem during the narrow span of years when Jesus and his Disciples were engaged in their ministry, which included at least three visits to Jerusalem for Passover.
