Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (19mm, 3.76 gm, 4h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5. Spain (Colonia Patricia?), 19-18 BC. CAESARI AVGVSTO, laureate head of Augustus left / MAR - VLT, circular and domed temple of Mars Ultor, legionary eagle (aquila) between two standards (signa) set between columns. RIC I 105b. RSC 192. Very rare with head left! A beautiful specimen, struck in high relief, with lustrous fields.
Augustus treated the recovery of the Roman standards lost in Parthia as a major military victory, and the return was celebrated in poetry, prose and imagery throughout the empire. The standards were brought back to Rome and placed in the newly built circular temple of Mars Ultor, as seen on the reverse of this attractive architectural denarius type.
