Arcadius (AD 383-408). AV solidus (21mm, 4.45 gm, 6h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5. Uncertain northern Italian mint, ca. AD 383-385. D N ARCADI-VS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Arcadius right, seen from front / VICTOR-IA AVGG, two emperors (Theodosius and Arcadius) enthroned facing, jointly holding globe, Victory facing behind, small upright palm on ground line. Cf. RIC 8c & 20c (Milan, with M-D mint mark). Apparently unrecorded and extremely rare, if not unique!
This type matches an issue from Milan (Mediolanum) dated to the time of the "cold war" between Theodosius and Magnus Maximus (AD 383-388). However, like several issues of Theodosius and Valentinian II, it lacks the identifying mint mark M - D. RIC still gives theses other examples to Milan, but Depeyrot has assigned them to an "uncertain mint in Northern Italy."
