Victoria gold Sovereign 1879 AU55 NGC, Royal mint, KM752, S-3856A. A very rare date, and in relatively exceptional condition. This is indeed the highest grade example of this date that we have ever handled. The closest comparable piece to this one that we have sold was a PCGS AU53 sold in April, 2016 for $7,000 hammer. Indeed, this is tied with 5 others for the highest graded example seen by NGC, with two others at the AU55 level seen by PCGS, and just two higher. Some even wear and marks commensurate with the grade, but nonetheless an attractive example, especially considering its rarity.
