British Colony. Victoria Specimen 5 Cents 1877-H SP66 Red and Brown PCGS, Heaton mint, KM9. One of the famous Heaton Specimens, possibly from the "Heaton Hoard" acquired by Paramount from the mint in the 1970's. A very rare issue, as only a few 1877-H 5 Cents were struck with medal die axis, and the vast majority were made with coin axis. There is some conjecture that these medal rotation pieces wer actually struck at the Royal Mint, as the 1877 (no mintmark) issues were struck at the Royal mint, and all of these pieces were struck with medal die axis. The characteristics of these Heaton coins (ie. strike and die axis) tend to lead one to the Royal mint. This piece is superbly struck, with nicely mirrored fields. The surfaces have more of the original mint-red color, than brown, and the surfaces are free of significant flaws.
