Charles & Johanna "Early Series" 4 Reales ND (1538-40) M-P XF45 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM0016. Nesmith-6d_var. Obv. Crowned arms divide ·M·-·P·. Rev. Rhomboid panel to right behind pillars; P assayer (for Pedro de Espina or Pedro de la Membrilla) below. A premium example of this "Early Series" type, coined after the first Rincon issues, using his later employed rhomboid dies that had been reworked to change the 'R' assayer initial to a 'P'. Rare, and our first offering of the variety at auction; considering its status as one of the first coins struck in the New World, and its overall choice condition for the type, a coin that should enthrall the collector of historic coins.
