Republic gold "World Fisheries Conference" Proof 500 lira 1984 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC, London mint, KM968b. Mintage: 200. A visually pristine example of this type that features the Turbot fish swimming leftward in the water. The finer of only two graded by NGC and the first example we've ever seen. Listed with an "issue limit" of 200 pieces on the original set certificate, but cataloged with a mintage of 74 in the Standard Catalog of World Coins, which reflects either a typographical error, or more recent research that concluded the original allotment was never dispersed.
Note: This coin is part of a complete 9-piece World Fisheries Conference set in gold that is being offered individually in this sale. Other coins from this set include: Cape Verde (Lot 30535), Ghana (Lot 30939), Liberia (Lot 31181), Mozambique (Lot 31299), St. Thomas (Lot 31569), Seychelles (Lot 31577), Somalia (Lot 31579) and Uruguay (Lot 31700).
