Ancients
Maximianus (first reign, AD 286-305). AR argenteus (2.64 gm). NGC Choice AU 3/5 - 4/5. Rome, AD 300. Laureate head of Maximianus right / XC - • - VI in three lines, surrounded by laurel wreath terminating in large jewel. RIC 15b (Carthage). Rare!

This issue was originally attributed to Carthage by the authors of RIC, but new evidence, including a specimen with PR in the exergue discovered in an English excavation, makes the attribution to Rome more likely. The reverse legend is thought to be describing the argenteus denomination valued at 96 coins to the pound of silver.
