A note from BCD: An easy, pleasant read and of course, the son of the legendary Ernest Babelon could not do otherwise than illustrate this book with ancient coins. He does so tastefully and not excessively. The photograph of Homs, opposite page 80, brought much sadness to this writer who remembers stopping at the outskirts of the city back in the 70's and relaxing in an idyllic open-air tea garden. It took just 40 years to change a small heaven into outright hell
