France Banque de France 300 Francs ND (1938) Pick 87s Specimen. The 300 Franc note's history is somewhat unique. The denomination was ordered in 1938 after diplomatic tensions between Germany and France caused a run on banks and a demand for currency, which depleted reserves of other denominations. When tensions eased temporarily, the notes were placed in reserve. After the fall of France in 1940, the notes were still held in reserve, but were eventually paid out to the Germans, who were demanding payment for occupation costs circa 1944-45. The notes had no legal status at the time and were finally abandoned by the Germans. The denomination was ultimately released to the general public in June, 1945, but never proved popular. It was gradually withdrawn between 1948 and 1950 and finally demonetized in 1963. This Specimen, which has a diagonal SPECIMEN perforation and solid zero serial numbers, grades Apparent Very Choice New 64 per PCGS, who notes minor mounting remnants on the back that are exceedingly difficult to spot through the holder.
