*The 1797 Two Pence was a one-year type coin which was issued to alleviate the chronic shortage of circulating copper coinage in the early Napoleonic era. Produced by Matthew Boulton in Birmingham it was a coin of huge proportions and a unique piece of British numismatic history. There was no other dated currency two pence coin produced after 1797, although some rare pattern pieces - notably the 1846 pattern 10 Cents or Two Pence coin of Marrian and Gausby - exist.
The vast majority of surviving 1797 specimens are found in Fine to Very Fine condition. In mint state this coin has virtually disappeared.
