* George IV ruled from 29th January 1820 until his demise on 26 June 1830. The eldest son of George III he was Prince Regent from February 1811 until the death of his father in 1820. Tall and handsome in his younger days George became obese in middle age. He had little care for his duties as Prince of Wales and later as King but he enjoyed the privileges of high office to excess. He was generally a profligate and ill-mannered man who was disliked by the public, but he is said to have had a charming side to his character. Nevertheless his coinage design was excellent and he gave his name to 'Regency' architecture and fashion.
