Great Britain. Pattern Two Pence or 10 Cents, 1846. BMC-2075. Struck in copper as a bronzed Proof. By Marrian and Gausby. Edge plain. Victoria. Obverse; Wyon's young portrait of Queen. Reverse; SMITH ON DECIMAL COINAGE 10 CENTS 1846. Reverse axis inverted. An extremely rare original striking. PCGS graded Proof 63 Brown. Estimate Value $1,600 - 1,800
* The Marrian and Gausby pattern coins were made in small numbers in 1846 and later restruck by a Mr Shorthouse of Birmingham in 1888, also in very small quantities. The restrikes were of inferior quality and exhibited rust marks from die deterioration. This original 10 Cent pattern can be distinguished by its high quality and the fact it is struck with an inverted reverse axis.
The mid-19th century was a time of great experimentation with decimalisation and proposed currency changes although Britain was not to experience decimalisation until after 1970! This pattern 10 Cents was of the same dimension and weight as the extraordinary one-year type 1797 'Cartwheel' Two Pence produced by Matthew Boulton at the Birmingham Soho Mint.
