Proof Three Cent Nickels
1879 3CN PR68 NGC. Iridescent pastel colors gleam from the satin-smooth surfaces of this exquisite 1879 proof three cent nickel. A Superb Gem in all regards, the reverse ribbon is fully formed and the strike is exceptionally sharp. The 7 and 9 in the date show minor recutting (Breen's so-called "heavy" date) but the loops in the numerals are not filled. Mirroring in the fields exists beneath the multicolor patina, and the surfaces appear technically flawless. This piece is tied for numerical finest among both regular and Cameo proofs. Census: 6 in 68 (1 in 68★), 0 finer, joined by 6 Cameo proofs in 68 and none finer (8/17).
