Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-101a, T-7, High R.3 -- Reverse Scratched -- NGC Details. VG. Tompkins Die State 1/5. A series of vertical pinscratches below the ribbon on the reverse accounts for the lack of a numeric grade. That problem aside, this is a pleasing (and well-circulated) example of America's first-year Flowing Hair half dollar. The date is faint but all four digits are readable. The reverse is several points finer than the obverse, with sharp rims and dentils for the VG Details assignment. Pleasing light, silver-gray patina covers both sides.
