Early Dollars
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Wide Date, B-16, BB-110, R.6, VF20 NGC. Bowers Die State III. A long die break extends from the rim below star 1 through the top of 179. Writing in the most recent edition of his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, Dave Bowers explains this "is one of the great rarities of the year 1798. Probably no more than 30 to 50 are known. Estimates of the surviving population have varied widely, to as low as six to 12 coins." This well-circulated gray and tan-gold example maintains good detail with even wear. A few small digs near Liberty's eye and a scrape below the curl are within the parameters of the grade. This is an extremely important opportunity for those assembling a series by die variety.
