1799 1C S-189, B-3, R.2 -- Environmental Damage -- PCGS Genuine. XF Detail. Breen Die State II, exhibiting the die chip "mintmark" in the field above the T in CENT. This briefly circulated piece shows strong detail for the XF level, although uniform granularity is present across each side. The surfaces are deep burgundy-brown and the Liberty portrait has sharp hair curls. The appearance is remarkably similar to that of the Joseph Mickley coin, making this piece among the finer-known examples of Sheldon-189 and an important condition rarity. The typical example is well-worn in the VG or lower levels. This variety features the only use of both dies. As usual for the issue, the present example is bold on LIBERTY and shows the date blending into the rim at the bottom of the numerals. Our EAC grade Fine 15.
