Buffalo Nickels
1926 5C MS67+ PCGS. CAC. While Gem and even Premium Gem examples of the 1926 are readily available, the issue only occasionally reaches the MS67 level and Superb Gem coins are significant condition rarities. More than 44 million pieces were struck, often with widely spaced, worn dies that limited sharpness of strike and compromised surface quality.
In terms of eye appeal and sharpness, the present example nothing short of stunning. The Chief's chiseled features display ice-blue shades softened by lemon-yellow and lavender highlights. Vibrant orange-gold shades grace the peripheries. Buff-gold and sky-blue join the palette on the reverse. Struck from fresh dies, the foreleg fur and braidknot definition are above average and the strike is sharp throughout. This is a superlative nickel for Registry Set purposes or for high-grade type -- Plus-graded, and tied at the top of the PCGS population with one other piece. No examples are certified by PCGS any finer. Population: 48 in 67 (2 in 67+), 0 finer. CAC: 11 in 67, 0 finer (7/17).
