Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-101a, T-7, High R.3, VF20 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/4. The Overton-101 variety is by far the most available 1794 die marriage, although the later O-101a die state is more frequently encountered. Examples in all grades are in demand by collectors of first-year Flowing Hair type, as well as by series specialists. The obverse die is in its first use on O-101, while the reverse die sees its fourth and final tenure, having distinguished itself by striking the vast majority of all 1794 half dollars produced.
This is a pleasing VF example with traces of reddish-gold mint luster still lingering in sheltered areas. The rims and dentils are bold, as are all four digits of the date. Moderate wear exists on the high points of Liberty's hair and the eagle's central elements. The silver-gray surfaces have an olive tinge with occasional blue and tan accents. Both sides are free of any adjustment marks.
