Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-101a, T-7, High R.3, XF40 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/5. As often seen, the reverse of this O-101a is in its late die stage with a ridgelike crack joining the second S of STATES to the tip of the uppermost olive leaf. The die pair was seventh in the emission sequence for 1794 half dollars and it was by far the hardiest of 11 total 1794 die marriages, with a rarity ranking of R.3. All other 1794 halves fall into the R.5 to R.8 range.
This example shows grade-appropriate smooth wear and attractive olive-gold toning at the borders. Steel-blue shades cover the fields and silver-gray patina defines the raised devices. Occasional light marks are seen with a glass, yet the dentils and rims are strong and traces of reflective luster remain in sheltered areas. We note bits of old, whitish residue within the crooks of the reverse letters and wreath, visible under magnification -- perhaps glue from an old coin board. Census: 13 in 40, 29 finer (8/17).
