Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-101a, T-7, High R.3, XF45 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/5. A total of 11 die pairs were needed to produce an estimated 23,464 1794-dated halves. Just 650 to 800 pieces survive among all varieties combined according to the 2015 Tompkins reference -- most of which represent either the O-101 and O-101a dies. All die marriages are scarce and most are rare, thus one of the great challenges for early half dollar specialists to collect 1794 half dollars by variety
This example of the O-101a late die state retains Choice XF definition on the devices. A somewhat bright, silver-gray coin, it shows a pale crescent of lilac-gray toning that occupies the right obverse field, with scattered gray accents on the reverse. Numerous shallow, Mint-caused adjustment marks angle across the eagle from top-left to lower-right. Faint lines and wispy marks dot the surfaces, with a singular small dig near star 3. Census (all 1794 varieties combined): 13 in 45, 16 finer (7/17).
