Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-105, T-3, R.5, Good 4 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 1/3. Star 2 is attached to the curl, while star 1 does not touch the hair in any way -- an obverse also employed on the very rare O-111 (T-2) and the very scarce O-106 (T-4). O-105 is relatively available compared to those two varieties, but it is still scarce in all grades. This example displays deep-gray fields with light-gray devices. The obverse is well-defined for the grade, lacking definition at Y in LIBERTY and above star 9. The reverse shows sinking of the die at the upper half of the eagle. We note scattered light porosity and a series of pinscratches across Liberty's bust point.
