Early Half Dollars
1797 50C O-101, T-1, Amato-330, R.5 -- Graffiti -- NGC Details. Fine. This earlier die state shows three of the die cracks on Reverse A that later develop into O-101a. Two of the three are only vaguely discernible with strong magnification, the third is readily visible. The first is extremely faint, connecting the tops of ES in STATES with the top of O in OF. The other is seen at the top of the first T in STATES and travels only faintly to the eagle's neck. The third is better developed and located at the upper-right of the O in OF. Several pedigree identifiers are listed on page 216 of the Amato reference, the most obvious being the graffiti in the left field in the form of a vertical scratch between stars 4 and 6, and a backward S in the lower-right obverse field. The surfaces are light overall with slightly darker peripheries. Detailing is stronger on the devices on the left part of each side, weaker on the right, indicating the dies were misaligned at the time of striking.
Ex: Stanley Simon Collection (Stack's, 1/1989), lot 1004, where it brought $15,400.
Over the past 15 years cataloger Jon Amato has brought his expertise in cataloging every Small Eagle half dollar that has been consigned to us. It is with a profound sense of loss that we had to say good-bye to Jon when he died in early August. Jon left us with a masterful 338-page reference on the series that we will continue to use far into the future when cataloging this short and interesting series.
