Bust Half Dollars
1812/1 50C Large 8 AU50 PCGS. O-101a, R.5. The 1812/1 Small 8 makes a regular appearance in auctions and at coin shows, but the 1812/1 Large 8 is rare. It is known by a single die marriage with two major die states. O-101a has a linear die crack between the 12 in the date, and O-101 lacks that crack. Both die states are on most Bust half dollar want lists, and are also in demand by those who collect strictly by Guide Book variety. This attractive AU50 example is a pearl-gray and almond-gold piece that shows numerous pockets of luster. The curls display light wear, and neither side exhibits any reportable abrasions. Population (for the variety): 1 in 50, 0 finer (7/17).
