Proof Seated Dollars
1858 $1 PR62 PCGS. For many years the mintage of 1858 Seated dollars was thought to be in the range of 60-80 pieces. That earlier estimate is clearly in error, if one looks at nothing more than the number of individual coins known. Today the mintage is generally believed to be 300 pieces. All examples are known to be proof-only with not even a rumor of any business strikes. This is a situation similar to the 1895 Morgan dollars, although 1858 dollars are much scarcer than their 1895 counterparts, yet they cost less because of the relative popularity of each series. This is a deeply mirrored example that shows just the slightest tinge of rose toning over each side. Hairlines explain the grade. Fully detailed in all areas. Population: 28 in 62, 45 finer (7/17).
