Proof Morgan Dollars
1878 8TF $1 PR64+ Cameo PCGS. CAC. VAM-14.8, Spiked Eye. A small die gouge at Liberty's eye earns this coin the "Spiked Eye" moniker. The VAM-14.8 dies were originally used for proof coinage -- represented here -- but were later employed for circulation strikes. The latter variant is scarcer, but this proof coin is equally intriguing. Under a loupe, the date numerals are faintly recut, and the left-hand stars show minor quadrupling.
Cameo eight tailfeathers proof Morgans are collectively rare regardless of variety. PCGS lists 27 such submissions, with the majority in the PR63-PR64 numeric range. Only a handful of CAC-endorsed coins are known. This Plus-graded near-Gem possesses pronounced contrast and significant appeal. The strike is sharp and no distracting marks are seen. Brilliant interiors cede to olive-gold and sea-green border toning, with a few small splashes of blue around the RIB in PLURIBUS. No Deep Cameos are recorded at PCGS. Population (all varieties included): 9 in 64 (4 in 64+) Cameo, 6 finer. CAC: 7 in 64, 4 finer (7/17).
