Liberty Quarter Eagles
1849-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The 1849-C quarter eagle is among the scarcer Charlotte quarter eagles from this period, rare in the upper AU grades and extremely rare in Mint State. In agreement with this analysis, Doug Winter estimates that only 125-150 pieces are known in all grades, mostly in VF and XF condition. This near-Mint example is rare by all accounts. An above-average strike leaves minor weakness only on the eagle's left (facing) leg, and the olive-gold surfaces retain some semiprooflike reflectivity in the fields. A brush of friction over the high points of the design is all that precludes a Mint State grade. Census: 24 in 58, 9 finer (7/17).
