Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1854-O $3 AU58 NGC. Variety 2. Coinage of three dollar gold pieces hit its peak in the first year of production, when three different mints struck the denomination. More than 138,000 coins were struck at Philadelphia, while Dahlonega and New Orleans issued significantly smaller numbers at 1,120 and 24,000 pieces, respectively. The New Orleans issue is sought-after in all grades but is particularly scarce at the near-Mint level and rare in Mint State. Demand for this issue is continuous and strong in all grades as it is the only O-mint date in the series.
The current coin is well-detailed with a brush of friction across the high points. Satiny straw-gold surfaces are mostly smooth and appealing. The protected peripheral regions of the fields show delicate reflectivity, suggesting an early die state. Census: 95 in 58 (2 in 58+), 22 finer (7/17).
