Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1860-S $3 AU58 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint struck three dollar gold pieces for commercial usage only in 1855, '56, '57, and '60. Of these four issues, the 1860-S has the second-lowest mintage at only 7,000 coins. Unlike the Philadelphia issues of the 1880s, the 1860-S three dollar circulated in the Western regions. Today, only a handful of Mint State pieces are known, and high-end AU coins are themselves rare. This piece represents only the sixth occasion on which we have offered a PCGS-graded coin in AU58. Auction realizations of the most recent pieces range from nearly $16,000 to more than $21,000, indicating strong demand for this conditionally rare branch mint issue.
The present coin displays satiny, partially lustrous surfaces and smooth fields. The wreath bowknot is weakly struck, but the obverse is sharp. Only slight high-point friction is observed under a loupe. Population: 10 in 58, 4 finer (7/17).
From The Morgan Hill Collection.
