Early Half Eagles
1802/1 $5 BD-1, High R.4, AU55+ PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b, shattered reverse die. This is a Centered Overdate variety, showing the 1 remnant centered in the loop of the primary 2. The reverse shows numerous die cracks in this late state. Bright yellow-gold surfaces have some areas of original luster but mostly exhibit lightly worn patina with minor field chatter. There is very little high-point wear. BD-1 is scarce with fewer than 100 survivors believed known. However, it is still among the more plentiful die varieties of the 1802 half eagle, often encountered in type and date collections, as well as the more advanced variety sets.
