Proof Liberty Half Eagles
1899 $5 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. With a mintage that matches the last two digits of the year, 99 proofs were struck of the 1899 proof half eagle. A curiously high number of survivors are known, especially high-grade ones. In all grades and with all degrees of contrast, both services have certified a total of 65 proof 1899 fives. Undoubtedly there are numerous resubmissions included in that total number, but a reasonable number of survivors would be in the range of at least 45 coins. There are 13 finer examples known, again combining the data from each certification service. The finest is an NGC PR69 Deep Cameo (8/17). This is a profoundly contrasted example. An orange peel texture is seen on each side, but is more pronounced on the reverse. The only mentionable pedigree identifier is a very shallow pinscratch that projects outward from the bridge of Liberty's nose.
