Liberty Double Eagles
1850 $20 AU58 NGC. California gold was shipped in quantity to both the Philadelphia and New Orleans Mints for a substantial production of double eagles in 1850. Always in demand as the first year of issue, 1850 twenties survive in reasonable numbers without any significant influx of shipwreck recoveries or foreign finds. This near-Mint example has a sharp strike and shows no large abrasions, although myriad small marks and field chatter scatter across what were once prooflike surfaces. Attractive medium-gold color has the subtle green tinge of Gold Rush bullion. Census: 154 in 58 (3 in 58+), 74 finer (8/17).
