Liberty Double Eagles
1872-CC $20 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Double eagle coinage at the Carson City Mint began in March 1870, but the mint's lack of a bullion account with which to immediately pay depositors reduced the amount of gold that was put through the coining process the first year. In 1871 and 1872, production of double eagles increased but remained in the low five-figure range annually. The 1872-CC double eagle is a semikey date today, surviving in limited numbers from extensive circulation in the Nevada Territory. Most of the 26,900-coin mintage is not known to survive. In Uncirculated condition, this issue is extremely rare and far out of reach for most collectors.
Some original mint luster remains in the protected regions of the fields on this About Uncirculated example, complementing bold design elements and warm orange-gold color. Scattered abrasions on the obverse are unobtrusive to the naked eye. Carson City double eagles of this period almost never seen without assorted abrasions.
From The Morgan Hill Collection.
