Liberty Double Eagles
1883-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The placement of the second C in the mintmark over the D in DOLLAR is a simple diagnostic marker for the more available of two known die pairs. Reddish-gold coloration, green-gold accents, and glowing luster are unmistakably original. Small grease spots occur under star 3, left of the neck, and below the arrowheads. The obverse exhibits pinpoint strike detail, while the reverse is moderately softer on the neck and tailfeathers. The MS61 grade assessment is limited by scattered bagmarks and grazes. The 1883-CC serves as an available issue to represent the CC double eagle type. Nearly 60,000 pieces were struck, and examples come to market in lower Mint State grades with some degree of regularity. Still, finer coins are rare with only 27 higher grading events at PCGS (7/17).
