Liberty Double Eagles
1890-CC $20 MS60 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Mint records indicate 91,209 Liberty double eagles were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1890, a modest production total in absolute terms, but not unusually small in the context of the series. The issue was released into circulation and many coins were used in foreign trade. A substantial number of pieces were repatriated from European holdings over the years and a small hoard entered the market in the mid-1990s to increase the supply available to present-day collectors. As a result, the 1890-CC is one of the more available Carson City twenties in today's market.
The present coin is an impressive Mint State specimen, with well-detailed design elements that show some incomplete detail on the eagle's tail feathers, due to lapping. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces retain much of their original mint luster and show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade. This coin should find a home in a fine collection of Carson City double eagles or a branch mint type set.
